Jurors in the Sam Parker murder trial on Wednesday seemed to make little progress. On Wednesday afternoon the jury was still split 4-8 on the murder charge.
At 3 p.m. Judge Jon “Bo” Wood called the jurors into the courtroom for an update. The jury forewoman said some progress had been made Wednesday.
The jury, at the judge’s direction, is not saying whether the 4-8 split is for “guilty” or “not guilty.”
Onlookers have grown anxious and ready for a verdict, as the number of onlookers have dwindled during 2-1/2 days of jury deliberations.
Some are predicting the trial will end with a hung jury. The trial began Aug. 17, which means it is in its 13th day.
Meanwhile the jury has reached verdicts on three other charges against Sam — computer invasion of privacy, giving false statements, and violation of oath of office.
The jury forewoman said jurors remain at 12-0 on these charges, but again without revealing whether the jury believes Sam is guilty or not guilty.
The jury, which consists of six women and six men, began deliberating about 3:30 p.m. Monday. It was selected from Bartow County because of heavy pretrial publicity in Walker and is being bused daily to and from Bartow. The jurors are not being sequestered.
Parker was charged in February 2008 with murdering his wife Theresa. He has been in jail since then. Theresa was a dispatcher with Walker County 911. Her last known contact with anyone was about 9:30 p.m. on March 21, 2007. Her body has not been found.
Sam was a sergeant with the LaFayette Police Department when she disappeared.
