As a teenager, I used to travel, in the summers, from Alabama to Summerville GA and Trion GA where my best friend's dad's family lived to spend a week with him and his family. My friend's grandmother made THE BEST homemade biscuits I have ever eaten. ;D
On our way to "Grandmother's House", we always passed the signs for Desoto State Park. I knew we were getting close as the park is less than an hour away from Trion and a little less than that from Summerville.
If memory serves me correctly, there were very few "national" cell towers in that area. More may have been added now.
BUT WHAT IF Theresa had Cingular in that area and a near dead battery on her phone, the last cell ping COULD HAVE BEEN within 25 miles of Lafayette.
If the husband was responsible for her disappearance, then he, as a law enforcement officer, WOULD have known when to get rid of the phone at a place where the authorities would concentrate on a search based upon a cell phone ping.
If one were to think in the manner of a cop, then he would have chosen to drive to an area where he was not known by the locals. He would want to the anonymity of being a tourist or naturalist, just getting away at a state park, especially at an out of state park. The skeletal crew at a state park in March in AL would have given him even more obscurity. he could have driven to and from the park, without entering the "park entrances" and not be detected. Typically, those roads are lined by protected forests. I am not sure if this is the case with Desoto, just my theory.
Now, there is a definite blackout of cellular service for Theresa's phone if she has employed Cingular from Trion to Desoto State Park. Has anyone established where Sam's cell phone's last ping was during this time? I think that is significant.
If Theresa used another cellular service, that service coverage area should be mapped against the "25-miles" from Lafayette and Trion.
It would be my guess that a policeman would not be so stupid as to leave a crime scene in his own backyard. He knows how the folks in his profession in that area respond and act to homicides. My bet is that he is counting on a long discovery process and the dissipation and deterioration of evidence to exonerate him.
Look in Alabama, guys, while you are looking at the new construction sites in Georgia. It can't hurt to explore the options and work on your own theories at the same time.
Sorry for the novel, this just struck a chord with me as I had many good times in Trion and Summerville as a kid!!
All my prayers to Theresa and her family!!
