The yellow tape is up. The Walker County Coroner is there. Now the investigation begins.
Several law enforcement agencies confirm that a badly decomposed body has been found in the woods behind Rock City on Lookout Mountain.
We're told a man from Graysville was in town visiting his mother, went hiking and found the body in a remote part of the woods. He ran from the woods and called 9-1-1.
"It's [the body is] right below Lover's Leap which is part of Rock City. It's approximately a thousand foot from the top of the Leap," Assistant Police Chief Ray Cross, with the Lookout Mountain Police Department, says.
The Walker County Coroner tells us early indications from clothing and bone structure show this is most likely the body of a male. He also says initial observations show this is probably not the remains of someone who jumped from the cliffs because of the how far back the body if from the rocks.
"The body has deteriorated it looks like it's been there at least a year. We don't have any obvious signs of trauma so we don't know it could have been just a hiker in the area, we have no idea and we won't know till we move that body to the G.B.I. in Atlanta," Dewayne Wilson, the Walker County Coroner, says.
The Chattanooga Police Department and the Lookout Mountain Police Department first responded to the scene but turned the investigation over to the Walker County Sheriff's Department (because it falls in their jurisdiction) and the National Park Service.
The body is currently secure and crews have wrapped things up for the night. The Walker County Sheriff's Department, the National Park Service, the G.B.I. and the F.B.I. will return to the scene Thursday morning at 8:30 along with an Anthropologist and then will transport the body to the G.B.I. crime lab in Atlanta we're they will try to identify the body.
